The first stop on our trip was Cappadoccia, in central Turkey. It is a place which has stayed near and dear to our hearts months after we left. Cappadoccia is a magical, mountainous place. There are amazing rock formations known as Fairy Chimneys, and the limestone mountains are celebrated for the unimaginable number of cave dwellings found inside. In this photo, I am inside one of the many caves. These caves are accessible to anyone who'd want to explore them. They are from the era BC. Many were dwellings, but others were simply caves created by the natural ways of the wind. Others were used as monasteries. One can also find numerous underground dwellings created by the ancient Christians - these dwellings go 20 floors below ground and held wine making apparatus, wells, and anything else someone in hiding would need to live 'comfortably.'
We walked all through Cappadoccia, using the town of Goreme as our base. There was fruit everywhere- growing on trees in public areas, and beyond. We ate our way through these walks; I especially enjoyed eating 'raisins' straight from the vine, delicious tomatoes, and the best apples I've ever had!
An amusing sight was had when we discovered that every now and then, a cave dwelling was still being used- as someone's home. Notice the photo of a cave dwelling with a satellite dish out front!
